If you cancel your Genki insurance before the end of a billing period you've already paid for, you may be entitled to a refund for the unused portion. This article explains when a refund applies, how it's calculated, and when to expect it on your account.
โ When a refund is due
A refund is typically issued in one situation: when you cancel your insurance before the end of a billing period that has already been paid.
The refund covers the unused portion of that billing period.
It is calculated pro-rata, based on the number of days between your cancellation date and the end of the paid month.
If your cancellation takes effect in a future month that hasn't been billed yet, no refund is needed โ the upcoming invoice is simply pro-rated to your cancellation date, or skipped entirely if cancellation falls before the billing date.
For details on how cancellation works, see How do I cancel my insurance?.
๐งฎ How the refund is calculated
The refund amount is based on a simple pro-rata calculation:
The monthly premium is divided by the number of days in that month.
The result is multiplied by the number of unused days remaining after your cancellation date.
For example, if your monthly premium is โฌ60 and you cancel 10 days into a 30-day billing period, you keep coverage for 10 days (โฌ20 used) and receive a refund for the remaining 20 days (โฌ40).
The refund amount appears on your final invoice in the Member Center, and is processed to your original payment method.
โฑ When to expect the refund
Once a refund has been processed:
It is sent to the original payment method used for the subscription (the same card or account that was charged).
Most refunds arrive within 5 to 10 business days, depending on your bank or payment provider.
Some banks or payment apps may take longer to display the refund on your statement, even after it has been issued.
If the refund hasn't appeared after 10 business days, the first step is to check with your bank or payment provider, since the delay is often on their side. If they confirm nothing has arrived, contact our support team.
โ Common situations
I cancelled mid-month โ when does my refund start? Your refund covers all days from the day after your cancellation date until the end of the paid month.
I cancelled with a future cancellation date โ will I be charged again before that date? If your cancellation date is in a future billing period, the next invoice will be pro-rated to end on your cancellation date. You'll be charged only for the days you're still covered.
I have multiple people insured under my account โ do they each get a separate refund? Yes. Each insured person has their own subscription, billing, and refund. If you cancel one but not the others, only the cancelled subscription will be refunded.
I cancelled but I see an open invoice in the Member Center โ why? Open invoices for past billing periods aren't cancelled automatically. If you have an open invoice from a period when you were still covered, it still needs to be settled. See Understanding your invoices, billing date, and renewal cycle for more on how invoices work. Contact our support team if you have questions about a specific invoice.
โ ๏ธ Situations where no refund applies
A refund is not issued in the following cases:
The insurance ended naturally at the end of its contract period (e.g. a Genki Traveler contract reaching its 1-year maximum). In this case, no refund is due because the full paid period was used. See What happens when your Genki Traveler insurance ends, and how to continue coverage.
The insurance was terminated due to non-payment. Open invoices still need to be settled, and no refund applies. See Reactivating insurance after termination for non-payment.
Retroactive cancellation requests. Self-service cancellation does not support retroactive dates โ if you have an unusual situation, contact our support team.
