Genki Traveler contracts have a maximum duration of 1 year and do not renew automatically. This article explains what happens when your contract ends, what options you have if you'd like to stay covered, and what to keep in mind when starting a new contract.
π What happens at the end of your contract
When your Genki Traveler contract reaches its end date:
Your coverage ends on the contract's final day.
No automatic renewal takes place β the subscription does not roll over into a new period.
You will not be charged for any month beyond the contract's end date.
You can still access your Member Center to view past invoices and download your contract documents.
π Options for continuing coverage
If you still need health insurance after your current contract ends, you have two main options depending on how much longer you plan to travel or live abroad.
Option 1: Start a new Genki Traveler contract
Best suited for travelers planning another year or less of travel.
You can sign up for a new Genki Traveler contract before or after your current one ends.
Each contract is completely separate from the previous one β coverage does not transfer over.
A new 14-day waiting period applies, unless the new contract starts on the same day your current contract ends, or at most one day after. In that case, the waiting period is skipped.
Pre-existing conditions apply to the new contract: any condition for which you had symptoms, advice, diagnosis, or treatment within the year before the new contract starts is excluded β including conditions treated under your previous Genki Traveler contract.
You can start a new contract at any time from the Genki Traveler sign-up page.
Option 2: Switch to Genki Native
Best suited for long-term living abroad, especially without a defined return date.
Genki Native is Genki's international health insurance product, designed for expats and long-term remote workers. Compared to Genki Traveler, it offers:
No maximum contract duration β coverage continues for as long as you keep paying
Broader long-term coverage, including chronic conditions when accepted at sign-up
A choice between Basic and Premium variants
Note that Genki Native involves a medical questionnaire at application, and the minimum contract period is 12 months. To learn more, see the Genki Native collection or visit the Genki Native product page.
β οΈ Things to know when starting a new Genki Traveler contract
When you start a new Genki Traveler contract after your previous one ends, a few important things change compared to staying on your current contract:
Pre-existing condition rules reset. Any condition treated during your previous contract is now within the one-year lookback window of the new contract, and is excluded.
The waiting period applies again, unless the new contract starts no later than one day after your previous one ends.
Your home country can be changed at the start of the new contract (it's locked in once the new contract begins).
Your region option (Worldwide limited in USA/Canada, or Worldwide including USA/Canada) can be set fresh at sign-up.
Pricing reflects your current age, which may differ from your original contract if you've moved into a new age group.

π‘ Planning ahead
To avoid a gap in coverage, the simplest approach is to start your new contract on the day after your current one ends. This skips the waiting period and gives you continuous protection.
If you're undecided between starting a new Traveler contract and switching to Genki Native, our support team can walk you through the differences based on your situation. The decision often comes down to how long you plan to be abroad and whether you need ongoing coverage for any condition.
